The golf community is is full of wonderful personalities and interesting stories . . . it’s really one of the games greatest charms. When I first heard about this book I was immediately interested because I had met and played a few holes of golf at Crystal Downs with the subject, Roy Vomastek. Prior to meeting Dr. Vomastek I was slightly familiar with the legend of a septuagenarian amateur golfer who could still strike fear into the hearts of players half his age, but I did not have an inkling of the full back story behind the big hearted doctor.
The authors expertly weave the tale of a small-town Michigan boy who grew up in the depression, served in the U.S. Army, began his own family and went on to become a small-town Michigan doctor . . . all the while nursing a lifelong love affair with the game of golf. The engaging story crescendos in the summer of 2010 when Roy, against the odds, makes an unlikely charge during the Crystal Downs club championship. With Roy as the book’s ever humble lead character and the Crystal Downs golf course in a supporting role this story is just a great pleasure to read. Currently available as a downloadable E-book (click the more info button below for details) I don’t think I could recommend a better way to spend $4.99. Roy Vomastek’s story is what golf is all about.
