Perry Maxwell’s Prairie Dunes

by Mal Elliott

Prairie Dunes is one of my favorite courses and one that I personally believe is slightly underrated at its current spot of #25 on the Golf Digest 100 Greatest list. I’ve had the good fortune to have visited this club twice and made six loops around this fantastic golf course. On my first trip I purchased the official club history book and only recently discovered this excellent publication by Mal Elliott. Elliott’s book starts with a detailed history of the club that includes biographical information on Perry and Press Maxwell as well as a few vintage photos of the course. The last 50 pages or so of the book feature short comments from two time Masters Champion Ben Crenshaw on each hole, an excellent description of each hole by the author and a plethora of spectacular photos taken from a variety of angles. In my opinion this is one of the best golf course books I have seen and it couldn’t be more fitting that the subject is one of the best golf courses in America. This is a must have for any fan of great golf course literature.
